Studio Edelweiss was founded in 2006 as a collaboration between Jan Matthys and Mich Van Den Berghe.
They met at the age of 16 and have been friends ever since. After persuing many different careers (philosophy, jazz & cooking) they enrolled in a course of photography at the Ghent Academy of Fine Arts. A mutual passion for staged photography and a shared bewilderment for the absurdity of everyday's life made it impossible for them not to work together!
Gradually they created a magic-realistic universe build out of children's dreams for grown ups, daily life absurdism and a profound love for the insignificant heroes of suburbia.
Storytelling is quintessential in Edelweiss photography. Inspiration is often found far from and beyond the boundaries of contemporary photography: Grimm, Caravaggio, Brassens, the Bible and Greek mythology, Frank Zappa and sleazy magazines ...
Apart from creating a body of artistic work Jan and Mich have been able to successfully merge their style with the needs of their clients. They have been working for magazines, institutions and agencies that weren't afraid to take the road less travelled by.
